Mindfulness & Meditation

Jon Kabat Zinn defines mindfulness as: “The awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally to the unfolding or experience moment by moment.”

Each meeting we will explore different meditation practices, learning as we go, finding what works best for us as individuals and as a group.

We are all beginners.

In a typical meeting, we will start with a short reading from a text. This might be a poem, an excerpt from a book, a short piece of fiction. I will select the reading for the first few meetings, but as I intend the group to be democratic and participative, group members can bring their favourite texts to future meetings. My preference is that we take turns to read, but this will be voluntary.

We will then have a 20-30 minute quiet meditation practice. Depending on preferences, we might sometimes use resources to lead the meditation, or we might simply explore the silence inside of ourselves.

Please note that the Group Leader is hosting rather than instructing or leading the group. He is not a trained meditation or mindfulness teacher.

After meditation, there will be an opportunity to reflect together to discuss how we found the session and to offer suggestions for the format of future meetings.
